How to use
Find and follow your closest river
The map shows rivers with their direction of flow downstream. Browse it to see river systems worldwide, and zoom in to see them locally in more detail.
-
Find your closest river
On the Map page, press Use my location, or type an address or place into the search box.
Your closest river is highlighted in dark blue, with a dotted line showing the distance to it in kilometres. A card shows its name and where it flows into; select the name to open the river’s own page.
-
Explore the network
Drag and zoom to explore. Arrows along each river point downstream, and once you zoom in, faint moving dashes show the water flowing. Click on any river to find its name and other information that may be available.
-
Creeks and streams
Smaller water-courses such as creeks and streams are drawn as fainter lines behind the rivers. They are not highlighted as your closest river unless you turn on Include creeks & streams.
-
Intermittent waterways
Rivers and creeks that are often dry, flowing only after rain, are drawn paler and dashed, without moving water. Much of inland Australia is like this.
